Growing pains
We launched the first version of Simplify Media last summer. For the past year, we’ve experienced smooth growth, but all of that changed dramatically less than 4 days ago when our application debuted in the Apple App Store. Our (aggressive) target was to have 100,000 downloads in 30 days. Instead we reached that goal in about 30 hours. As of last night, we had 205,909 downloads.
Your generous reaction to Simplify Media has exceeded our wildest projections. Blogs like: Gizmodo, Lifehacker, TUAW, CrunchGear and Download Blog and forums / news sites like: modmyifone, MacRumors, AppleInsider, MacBidouille and digg are filled with encouraging comments. However, there have also been people who ran into trouble.
The overwhelming response has caused us to experience some growing pains:
Infrastructure: We discovered two problems with our servers (one Friday and another last night) that forced us to scramble. That meant many of you couldn’t connect for a period of time.
Product: We learned that two of our features, album art on the iPhone and password reset, weren’t scalable, so we disabled these. If you have forgotten your password, email us from the address associated with your screen name.
Support systems: We found out that our email provider enforces a hard limit on the number of email we can send per day.
Now we face a dilemma. According to the “free for the first 100,000″ plan we announced, we should be charging for new downloads. However, we are not confident that we can deliver a user experience that meets our expectations (and yours) until we work out a few more kinks. As a result, we’ve decided to remain free for a while longer as we make improvements. In return, we ask for your continued patience as we work through the growing pains.
A final note: to stay ahead of the curve, we are schedule a maintenance window on 8/19 from 9:00 -9:30a Pacific, that’s tomorrow.

Well, all I can say is that those numbers are quite impressive!!
Will we see the album art feature in a future release?
Thanks for the free App and thanks for keeping us informed.
Any chance that you are going to open a Forum in support of Simplify Media?

As you can see from the numbers, you are indeed filling a need in the MP3 player realm.
I was one of the users that was having troubles last night, but today I had the wonderful experience of using my iTouch to listen to my entire iTunes library by using your app.
I appreciate your efforts and wish you all the success you can gather before Apple builds in similar functionality in its iPod/iPhone firmware or iTunes software.

@tobodi : While Apple may build this in the future into Itunes, it will only work with Itunes/Apple, the beauty of Simplify Media is that it also works with Linux and Windows, which makes it more versatile…

Hi – so far I’m impressed, but have experienced a few issues. Maybe a post here on the blog where people can provide real world feeback?
First thing – I have a large iTunes library of about 25000 tracks. It took hours and hours for the entire library to become “available”. I restarted my PC and Simplify Media loaded… Only to discover it was re-indexing my collection from scratch!
The second issue is lyrics. On iPhone you cannot scroll down to follow the lyrics. The page will bounce back up if you try to scroll.
Otherwise, great work!

paul said,
August 18, 2008 @ 5:45 pm
@ryan, we’ve 8 or 10 reports of the re-indexing problem. we had never heard of it before, but, in trading emails back and forth, it seems that there are two possible explanations
1) an external drive that goes to sleep or is not mounted when Simplify Media starts. that causes the program to think the music is no longer shared, and it drops them from the local database and then treat them as new when they appear.
2) some part of the file description changes, perhaps due to some backup software. we are investigating, but the change would cause us to think they were new.
Fortunately, about half of the people who found it have written back to say it disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared.

Hi,
I haven’t been able to get my library on mac os x to successfully scan. I have my music on an external hard drive. I noticed on my iPhone, that the log mentioned an issue trying to connect to Amazon’s web servers (I had two free downloads from Amazon, that I have now deleted).
Are there any suggestions you have on what I need to do in order for my library to be scanned (it’s about 5400 songs, 24 gb).
Thanks!

I am having the same problems @Ryan was having. I too have a large library 22k songs, I installed simplifymedia at about 7pm last night. When I looked this morning, only 5000 or so songs had been indexed. Thinking I may need to restart, SimplifyMedia relaunched, and now is re-indexing again and is at 3k songs. Hopefully it finds the rest this time around..

I too have had the re-indexing problem. I have 19000 tracks on an external HD, The drive has stayed mounted throughout. Any settings I can use to overcome this? Also could you let us know if Simplify is doing any kind of compression to the music?

Ugh. At first I loved this program, all my 14,000 tracks available right at my fingertips. But when I decided to change my computer name, all hell broke loose and now even though Simplify Media on my desktop says Im sharing 14,000 songs, I can *never* get more than 1,000 available on my iPhone. I tried resetting the database, reinstalling the app, rescanning, etc. Still won’t show my full list of music, or even the playlists. Any ideas?

First off, great application. Keep up the great work. I am having a problem this morning where I am running the Simplify Media application on my iPhone over Edge and it plays a song or two and then the Simplify Media application crashes and launches my iPod on my iPhone and starts playing songs. I am not sure if this is something that you have seen before. I read on your blog that there was going to be some maintenance this afternoon (12pm-12:30pm est) so I am not sure if my issues are related to that or is being caused by something else. My software is up to date on my PC (1.0.0.1043), iPhone (Apple Software: 2.0.1, Simplify Media: version downloaded from the App Store on 8/17).
BD6675 said,

Update: looks like I had to play a few songs in a row for the rest of the index to load up. Everything appears to be working fine again. Maybe a “scanning library” screen or “updating song list” would be a good idea.

This is a fantastic app, for sure. It was working fine as of this past Saturday morning, but since then, I dropped from 5k songs down to only 8 songs total???? I’ve reset just about everything, made sure Bonjour was up to speed etc, and no luck. I’m only showing about 3 albums now, and the number is NOT rising. I sure hope this gets worked out, I’ve told so many people about this great app, and now I can’t use it myself.

I first want to say how much I’ve enjoyed your product. Currently listening a songs with a friend of mine and it works great.
The only issue I have is being able to add the shared songs to a playlist. I was able to add all the songs from a search by double clicking on them in Winamp, but I really would like to drag and drop songs to the playlist. This may be a problem with iTunes and Winamp, but thought I would just share it.
Thanks for the great program!

First off, this program is the best program on the iphone app store. There are a few items that i have noticed that crop up when i am using this program.
1) when my iphone goes from the 3g connection to a local wireless network the program stops playing the music and just says it’s buffering.
One thing I tried thought it might be was that the iphone needed to be reauthenticated so i would go back to the login screen on the iphone and clicked on my username until the password dialog popped up and i would then re-enter my password, then save the changes. Now when i go back to the shared folders list it says that the server cannot authenticate my login….
So i turn off my wireless on the iphone and go back to 3g and it works no problem.
Is there something that can be done such that, when you go from 3g to wireless connection the program automatically re-authenticates your phone and continues the stream where you left off or at least continues with a new song.
If you can remedy this, then this program would be something that would totally be worth paying for.
Also, something else to think about is that when the phone locks the wireless i think by default is turned off so the phone goes back to 3g in this state. So if you correct the other problem this may be an issue that crops up.
Cheers,
George

Sorry to post again, I figured out that my problem is my external drive is hooked to a wireless hub via my wireless router. If all is not well (say for example you didnt start up the hub program, shame on me) it wont work. So that means this app is likely still working just great, but its me the end user that had the bugs.

If you can make the app work like the Ipod, this app will be great.
i.e. being able to listen to the music while not having the app open (Having to reconnect everytime you need to access another app or phone call kills the app for me)
So close to perfect you can taste it…

Thanks, Paul. I am in fact using an external drive to hold my music. I usually start it up when I start the computer. Simplify must have loaded before I started the drive. I’ve deselected “Start automatically” from the Simplify options. Hopefully this will allow it to first index all the tracks and then I can manually load Simplify once my drive and computer are running.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I appreciate the continued efforts from you guys to get this program working. The problems you guys have had are understandable and I hope you get through them because when Simplify works on my iPhone, it’s absolutely great.
It works somewhat consistently on the desktop client for me, but it is very inconsistent in being able to work on my iPhone. I’ll see all the artists on one shared library using the desktop client but not all of them on my iPhone. Frustrating when you want to listen to the one artist that’s missing!
In most cases I probably would’ve given up on iPhone software at this point but your product and idea are superb and blog posts are encouraging. I like knowing a company will do what they can to make their consumers’ experience better.
So thanks.

Love the app so far. I do have a question though.
Does your computer need to be completely “on” for the software to work? For example, my computer goes to sleep after 20 minutes or so … and when I’m at work, I’ve found that I’m having trouble accessing my music on my iPhone.
Is there a solution for this?

One bug and a suggestion:
Bug – Once I’m streaming music onto my iphone using Simplify I noticed that there’s also a ’song’, ‘artist’ and ‘lyrics’ tab. The problem that I seem to keep having is when I press the ‘artist’ or ‘lyrics’ tab, I can only read the text that is showing. If i scroll down, the rest of the text is cut off. I mean, I can see the very top potion of the text so I know there’s more description but for some reason, it wont load show up when i scroll. This happens when I press ‘artist’ or ‘lyrics’ and it does this about 95% of the time.
Suggestion – Is there anyway to be able to use the controls on a stereo headset to lets say, pause a song or skip to the next track? Kind of the same function that the iPhone feature has. It would make it much easier controlling my music experience. Just a thougnt.

Kind of annoying that it just endlessly buffers, but doesnt seem to play now on my 3G. As soon as I fix one issue, another seems to arise. It’s just not reliable at all at this point. This app has so much potential, and it was free, so I’m not too disappointed. Call me when it costs $4 and is working. Heck I’d pay $10 for it….if it was consistent.

To those of you who have huge music files (I have 27k and 175 playlists) – patience. I learned the hard way that it takes patience. It took all day to index my songs, that is hours. It took another 15 minutes after the indexing for my playlists to show up on my iPhone. All was working well until last night (including playing songs on my brothers system) when iTunes started indexing again on its own on both our systems. That took hours again to complete for both of us. I went to bed without my playlists showing on my iPhone. This morning I still did not have my playlists. I may have gotten impatient again and reset my iPhone database. 30 minutes later all my playlists showed. Initially, my brother’s playlists did not show either. He did not reset his iPhone database and his playlists finally showed. I did not need to reset the iPhone database it seems. Impatient again, I am. Now we both are up and running and as I write this are listening to each others songs on our iPhones!!
Good work Simplify. Work on the glitches. This is a great way to listen to even more music.

Can someone explain why SimplifyMedia’s servers are important to me as an end-user? The comms occurs between my iPod and my music collection right?
There should be no way anything — either from the PC housing the music collection or from the music device — is going up onto the cloud and into Simplify’s systems . . . PLEASE someone tell me I’m right about that???
I’d hate to think my playlists are being logged by Simplify or even more sensitive information such as my PC name, IP address etc etc
Someone said,

I personally think they are copying everyone’s music into their harddrives. Why else would it be free? To get a hold of a billion songs of music!!
Someone said,
August 20, 2008 @ 12:57 pm
With that being said, I still think this app is incredible.
It just needs the ability to CREATE PLAYLISTS from other people’s libraries on both the iPhone and iTunes.
Someone said,
August 20, 2008 @ 1:33 pm
What determines how compressed the music stream is? Is there any way to manually control how much compression is applied to the streams? I notice when streaming via 3G that the initial song you play is HIGHLY compressed and then the subsequent songs are still compressed somewhat, but not as much. I’d love a way to be able to set the compression limit to say 128kbps.
The stream sounds more like a 64-94kbps bitrate. What is the official word on this?

I’m running Simplify Media on Windows XP and XP 64-bit. The longer the program runs, the more memory it consumes. It starts around 25MB, per running application (there are usually 2 or 3 Simplify Media related apps running), and the peer app will keep consuming memory. After running for a day it was up to 115MB. Is there some kind of memory leak?
paul said,
August 20, 2008 @ 4:07 pm
@wadeNG, not that we are aware of. try a restart and see if that clears it up
@someone, how would we re-sell the billion stolen songs? we have been doing this for a year and our privacy policy is clear
@paul c, if you can show us how to connect to devices anywhere without port-forwarding (which we don’t require) and without using another computer to act as a rendezvous point (like we do, like Skype does, etc), you’re hired! we don’t talk much about our architecture because our users don’t care, but here is an old post that explains things: http://www.simplifymedia.com/blog/?p=9
@doug, that means you can’t reach our servers to connect. we’ve had this happen (rather mysteriously) with a few 10.5.3 folks. the upgrade to 10.5.4 has solved it every time
@g, seriously? the same time code on every song each time? please send us an Report Issue from your phone and add that description. we’ve never heard of that problem before
@troy, we’ve had a few users mention something similar. we have no idea why it can work perfectly for one phone and not well at all for another. we’d love it if this could all be resolved with a firmware update, but we don’t know the cause
@domenic, audio only (for now…)
@brut, sorry about that. it’s a known issue but if you leave it on the artist or lyrics tab they should be there in full for the next songs
@mike, yes. check your OS settings to control sleep. also, make sure the simplify setting to allow sleep is not selected
@michael, the best way to get everything on the phone is to let it run for a while the first time to fully load your song list. you’ll know it’s down when your playlists appear as they load last. after that everything should appear right away whenever you start up.
@ryan, thanks, we are learning a few things
@read me!, apple controls background operation
@george, when you change networks you have to restart the app

Im running on Windows Vista. The problem Im encountering is eternal buffering. Even when my connection is idea I run into times where it will just not play at all. I can look at the library but I can never get beyond buffering. It would be nice to have some sort of status as to the progress of the ‘buffering’ so one can tell if any headway is being made. You’re just left there wondering if it will ever work! I love the program concept. I’m just not sure what else I can do to make conditions ideal for it to function properly.

For the last several versions of Simplify, which I’ve installed on my dual 2 gig G5 and on my G4 PB, the application has gobbled up so much RAM–consistently using around half a gig of RAM–that I have stopped using it. I don’t know if anyone else has had this experience, of whether it’s a matter of the application being less than copasetic on PPC chips, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s a deal breaker.

I have had your app for a while now, but for some reason, it just gets locked up at the “Scanning Libraries…” phase. It won’t even connect to freinds machines either. In browsing for a solution, I checked the Console. I’m on a Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro (2×2.66GHz) with 6GB RAM and 10.5.3…

First, great app, huge potential and a great start, thanks so much for the effort it must have taken to get things this far. I’ve got the app istalled on my MacBook Pro, my office server and my iPhone as access to the 16,000 songs on the office music database on my phone was just what I wanted.
The only bug I have noticed is unreliable service on my MacBook Pro (running 10.5.4). The music indexes OK, pretty fast too and I can see the server library in iTunes but after about 3 or four minutes everything vanishes as the server appears to disconnect. This hasn’t happened over the ofice wifi netwrk only over my broadband connection at home.
My 3G connection on the phone does seem to struggle to maintain playback, but this must be a problem with O2 rather than your software.
Keep up the good work.

There do seem to be some issues. Sometimes it will say “Buffering” for a minute before finally playing, sometimes it never starts playing. Often times this happens on the very first song I start playing, and then it’s okay after that, but on occasion it’s spontaneously occurred in the middle of a play list. I’ve witnessed this issue on two unique iPhones with unique accounts and libraries.
I am desperate for this application to support video. At the moment if I want to play my videos on a television in my house, on my network, I have to take my laptop with me to the television and hook it up and then play the videos over my network. If I could do this with the iPhone it would be much more convenient, as the iPhone is a much smaller device and I’m generally carrying it around with me all the time. Of course being able to play my videos on the road, albeit reduced quality due to the 3G network instead of WiFi, would be a nice perk.
Finally, it’s unfortunate that the iPhone has such tight controls on multitasking. As others have mentioned, this application would be near perfect if one could listen to music with it while doing other things on their iPhone. I realize you have no control over this, but it will be significant roadblock for many people. This is the same problem I with Pandora or Last.fm. Who knows, maybe Apple will allow background operation on a few select apps in the distant future.
Looking forward to the next version, and I hope that the wait until video streaming isn’t too far down the road.

I just wanted to leave a positive comment as well: After the initial NOD32 problem, this program has worked flawlessly for me. Keep up the great work!!!

Just happened to come here to see if anyone else was having problems with the volume control and I saw the post from Paul.
To everyone at Simplify Media, “You people rock!”
I can only begin to imagine the amount of work and resources that have gone into this app. And then to come here and see a post that not only acknowledges specific problems but also suggests a path forward is pretty amazing. Consider in contrast the “information” that Apple has given out about the status of MobileMe.
I love this app and if, in the future, you want to charge for it, I’ll be in line with my wallet out.
Please keep up the good work!

Hello from the UK!
I LOVE this app! Have 30k of songs indexed on my iMac (which did take a while) but have had no probs using this app with my iPhone 3g over wifi or the 3g network.
I look forward to seeing what the future holds for you guys and the application!

hallo from germany,
very great program and i love it. but I have some transfer problems. often I must wait for a very long time ( more than a minute or longer), until a song begins to play.sometimes the songs do not play at all. a second problem is the volume slider. it is very hard to adjust the volume from the screen. the slider will not react. also there is no syncronisation between the hardware volume knobs and the slider on the screen. if i change the volume via hardware knobs the screen slider will not move.
But as I already said, great program. and many thanks for it.
I hope you can solve my the problems

Hey, whilst sorting out the kinks, why not add a donations feature to your website to enable contributions until your charging policy goes live?
Certainly worth it!

Enjoy the product but I definitely think there is a memory leak. I’ve got 9300 songs shared and SimplifyPeer.exe is currently using 698Mb of RAM after running for 3 days. Yesterday it was at ~500Mb and the day before, ~300Mb.
I had the same thing happen when I first installed things. It started out small but after 3-4 days, it was using ~600Mb until I restarted it.
any ideas?

This is pretty cool. I loved – I have been streaming UPNP (Using TwonkyVision) files from my home computer to 2 Phillips Wireless Media player – Now, to have @ Itouch is awesome.
I would just love to have my collection sorted by folders/files instead of Tags since is hard to organize so many files. This is one reason why I dont use Itunes – My entire library is based on folder structure only
PS: If you guys need some help translating this tool/website to portuguese, let me know as I am fluent in portuguese.
Thanks

There’s definitely a bug that causes a huge memory leak from my XP install. The process was consuming over 500Mb of RAM after 2 days! Love the program and would love to see that cleared up but until it is I’m not going to be able to use it.

I was sing the program successfully for a few days and then all of a sudden I have experienced program crashes and constant spinning beach ball on my Mac running 10.5.4.
Sometimes, users appear as disconnected but their libraries appear in iTunes. When trying to browse those libraries, it cannot connect.
Does this have to do with large libraries? Is there a limit?
hope an update is coming soon…This is a great app!
