Ooh la la

cover art, artist bios and lyrics in Simplify Media Mobile
(click for extra sexiness)

When we released the last version of Simplify Media Mobile, we hinted at some new features we hoped to release before turning our attention fully toward the iPhone SDK. Well, here they are.

Album art – this version uses Amazon Web Services to search for a match. In the future we will display the cover art already associated with the file for increased accuracy and rely on Amazon as a fallback.

Artist bios – from last.fm. These user-created bios are distributed under the GNU free document license.

Lyrics – courtesy of lyrics wiki and also user-generated and distributed under the GNU free document license.

Shuffle – select Shuffle from the top of any song list, and the tracks from an album, a genre, an artist or a playlist will be randomized for your enjoyment. It even works with the All Songs list.

Build 949 of Simplify Media Mobile is a recommended update for all iPhone and iPod Touch users with firmware 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4. It is available now through AppTapp Installer and STE Packaging.

Totally and completely … KICK ASS! Now we need to be able to share playlists between friends, and most importantly, be able to MERGE them with shuffled playback.

this is really awesome, but when will there be a version that can scrobble what you’ve listened to? i use mobilescrobbler on my ipod and would use simplify media constantly if it would just scrobble the songs as usual!

Is ther any possibility of getting a player or app for the Nokia N8×0 tablets? Do you have an open API or SDK for 3rd party development?

    BTW, This totally rocks!

    cheers,

Currently this isn’t working for me. Every time I enter in my username and password for the server running on my PC and try and login on my iPhone (fw 1.1.4) it crashes after a few seconds of trying to connect.

Also, the server on my computer is only finding about 80% of my music in my iTunes or Winamp playlists.

I have also tried running the server in Linux using Rhthymbox but the same thing happens. The app crashes on my iPhone.

wow! thanks for all of the excellent comments. we really appreciate them.

@JELaVallee, if our iPhone app proves popular, we’ll want to make our mobile version available for other platforms. an advanced Nokia device is an obvious candidate, but our choices will depend on popularity. right now, there is no API, but we would like to find a way to let developers extend our functionality at some future point. we’ll need help building everything people are asking for.

@phinn, thanks for sending the Report Issue, and, as I mentioned in my email sorry about the problem. from your message, it sounds like your iPhone can play from your windows machine but is struggling from linux. fortunately, we are about the release a major update for linux and I think it will clear up the problem.

    Very nice application!
Can I use it to send music to a specific airport express (ala airtunes?)

It would be nice if I can use my iphone to play music from my PC on whatever airport express I have at hope.

I really wanna see video streaming through this program… This would perfect the program for me. Other than allowing mobile syncing with Itunes where you can change up the music through Wifi on your Itunes libary. This would really be great.

@pandrag, it is possible we are not reading your iTunes library file correctly. There are 3 things to try:

    1) Reset (under the main Simplify Media menu or right-click on the S in your Tray/Dock). This handy option can work wonders

    2) Switch to folder sharing. (Preferences > Sharing tab)

    3) Send us a Report Issue – and if 2 helped, can you also include a zip of your iTunes Music Library.xml

@jason and leandro, this is a great suggestion and something we will explore for the 1.2/2.0 firmware version. on the desktop, we’ve been happy that other plugins can scrobble for us. on the iPhone, things are different

@andrew, video is one of our most requested features. we have some work to do to finish up audio, but we certainly plan to work on video capabilities after that.

I think if you provides an API or something, we the people can work on plugins. Specially for scrobbling.
    What do you think guys?

Keep up the fantastic work. It is a killer app, 5 of my friends have installed it within 24hours after I had told them how magic it was! I love it. We love it. However, I have two questions: on Leopard, would it be possible to have the program run as a daemon (no icon at all)? Would it be possible to select which playlists has to be shared? Again, great work.

no scrobbling till the 1.2/2.0 firmware version?? bummer. why wait? who knows that apptapp installer will even work on the new firmware, unless you mean for the “official” version built using the apple sdk? cant you either interface with the mobilescrobbler app or talk to the developer of that project about joining forces somehow?

trying not to be too complainy, but it just seems like the one thing keeping this from being the best app ever made for the iphone/ipod.

I agree with John, MobileScrobbler is open source: http://dev.c99.org/MobileScrobbler/

Why don’t you look at the source and see how the hell they’re capturing iPod played songs?

It’s so easy.. If you can do a software like simplify why it’s that hard to steal that small piece of code? (with the mobilescrobbler notification of course)

Great work. Don’t forget to K.I.S.S. your UI as you expand its features, and you’ll stay one of the premier iPhone apps :)

    Noah said,

Yes, you guys should absolutely work with MobileScrobbler. You don’t need to steal any code, you just need to work with each other on a notification scheme.

I don’t see any reason why you need to support scrobbling without also requiring MobileScrobbler installed — it would be a poor solution to duplicate that functionality when it’s already there, open, and stable anyway.

    Noah said,

(BTW, it’s too bad you didn’t take this approach from the start, because then you wouldn’t have needed to build your own bio, lyrics, etc. support as it comes with MobileScrobbler as well. More time to spend on video, right?)

    paul said,

@mike – keeping it simple is our goal!

@noah, leandro, john, rasmus – two points. First, as we have mentioned on our blog, we like MobileScrobbler. It’s a great app and we are happy we have gotten to know its developer, Sam Steele. Second, to work with 1.2/2.0 firmware, every existing iPhone application needs to be rewritten. It’s a significant amount of work and it’s our focus right now.

Thanks again for all the input. It will certainly make the next version of Simplify Media better.

i love simplify media. i use it mostly to play my huge music library on the ipod without having to sync everything with itunes.
so far it works perfectly, but sometimes i am having strange problems. simplify media shows my my library and all songs correctly, but as soon as i want to play a song, it shows me the playing-screen with the album art etc, it tries to start buffering, but it directly jumps to the next track, then the next etc. until the playlist is finished without having played anything. i tried to reset both simplify media on both my pc and on my ipod and also restarting the applications, but it didn’t help. i disabled my firewall, but even this didn’t help, and i thought that if the firewall was causing problems, the tracks wouldn’t have been listed anyhow.
the first time i could fix it by restarting my computer. now i had the same problem again, and the only fix was to shut down and restart the ipod completely.
is this a known problem? thanks for any help!

ps. another big wish i have would be the following: please enable simplify-media to also work offline. that means that i could hear all my library though my internal wlan, without having to be connected to the internet. sometimes i lose my internet connection because of huge traffic, and simplify media won’t work either. but it would be really cool if i still could still listen to my local songs through wlan. is there some technical reason that this is not possible?

    thanks agian, olaf

I can’t seem to get simplify media to acknowledge all of my songs. I have 6000+ tracks in my iTunes library the application says 2090 files available. All of my songs are mp3s.

    Why is this this?

    Thanks

oops, missed a few comments here.

@Kevin, thianks for sending is a Report Issue. The diagnostics were helpful. In the first case I think we were looking at an older version of your iTunes Music Library. In the second, we rely on certain Microsoft files that are part of the Operating System when handling mp3s. It is likely that some other program has de-registered a file critical for playback. You wouldn’t have noticed it since most players user their own decoders, rather than the system one. Hopefully the instructions I sent will fix your chipmunk problem.

@Fredrik, yes, wifi only for now. We are looking forward to 3G too.

@olulv, I’m sending you an email.
